Winter in Japan part 5: Yummy Tokyo and Kamakura

Hi everyone. I was browsing through my pictures to decide on what blogpost to do and I realized that I still have some photos of my Japan trip from last year that I haven't written about. I can't believe how fast time flies and it has already been one year. I have every intention to go again this year.. if and only if my financial situation permits (chances are looking slim as of now).

So for now, I guess I will have to settle for looking at pictures.

This is also the last installment of the 5 part blogposts that took me so long to complete. For those of you who hasn't read them, you can see Part 1 HERE, part 2 HERE, part 3 HERE and part 4 HERE.

p/s. If you are hungry as you are reading this, BE WARNED!! Delicious and mouth-watering food pictures await you in this post.

I highly recommend you guys to check out this Japanese barbecued skewers (串焼き/kushiyaki) place called Monjirou もんじろう in Shibuya if you visit Tokyo. I visited this place 2 years ago during my first trip to Japan and I can never forget the taste of the delicious food there. So when I returned to Tokyo, I went back
to satisfy my craving and it did not disappoint.

This is deep-fried mashed potatoes known as Korokke. I really like Korokke and I always order it if I see it on the menu. This one was a good korokke: the mashed potatoes filling was creamy and the panko shell was crunchy. And not to forget the slightly sweet and sour dipping sauce. *drools*

This dish might not be for everyone.. It's stewed pork and pork intestines with root vegetables. I don't really like to eat offal so I didn't try any of those but the root vegetables were absolutely delicious. They were so soft that they melted in my mouth with the slightest pressure and the rich savoury broth has permeated every bit of the vegetables. Need I say more?

This is Dare Tsukune (Kinda like a Japanese style kebab). The meatball was of a softer silky texture and there were bits of soft bones in it that gave it a delicious texture and a slight crunch. With the savoury sauce this is excellent paired with sake.

Chicken skewers with spring onion. Spring onion in Japan was seriously the most amazing spring onion that I have ever tasted in my life. They do not have the grassy pungent flavour and they were just sweet and juicy. You really have to try it to believe it. When sprinkled over juicy and perfectly cooked chicken thigh skewers, they were simply a match made in heaven.

Ham, cheese and avocado spring roll. I wonder why I haven't seen anyone make spring rolls like these elsewhere!! The cheese was all melty and enveloped all the other ingredients. The ham added a right amount of saltiness and bite while the avocado just contributed to increased creaminess in the dish. I assumed this dish was really popular because it was sold out at like 8pm.

Raw egg with rice. I had very low expectation for this dish. I mean... it's raw egg mixed into a bowl of rice, how good can it be. When I took one bite of it, I was so surprised by the fragrance of the egg. It didn't have any of the fishy taste and the fragrant egg enveloped every grain of rice. Accompanied by the slightest seasoning with the Konbu Shoyu, it was love at first bite.

Yakitori rice. Imagine the perfectly cooked and juicy chicken skewers placed onto a bowl of rice. A bowl of perfectly cooked rice just tasted extra delicious on a cold winter night.

Here is the contact details of Monjirou. Do keep this place in mind if you visit Shibuya.
15-15 Sakuragaokacho  Shibuya, Tokyo 150-0031, Japan

Shopping is definitely one of the most exciting itinerary for me when I go on holiday. I had a quick lunch near Shibuya 109 because I need to have the maximum amount of shopping time that I can possibly get and i found this place called "Big Chef Dining". It's a fast food restaurant that serves western style dishes, including Omurice (rice wrapped in fluffy omelette), which I love!!!
The price was very affordable and the portions were huge. Look at the fluffy and perfectly cooked eggs, and not to forget the yummy demi glace sauce. How I wish fast food could be like this where I live.

What will happen if you put Salmon roe and lightly broiled salmon on a bowl of rice? You will make me very very very happy. Salmon roe adds the right amount of saltiness and richness while the salmon is just so fresh and melted in my mouth.

Yeap.. I get so excited that I even have to pose with the bowl of rice. Just shows you how much I love this.

Well.. I did do other things other than eating in Japan. I went on a walking tour in the historical city of Kamakura. I really loved it because a lot of the architectures remained and it felt like I travelled back in time.

I really love visiting Japanese temples. The scenery was just extremely beautiful. There was also a very calm and serene atmosphere that I really enjoyed.

Look at all the Kois in the pond. So beautiful isn't it.

A very majestic buddha statue. It was previously housed in a temple but an earthquake struck and destroyed the temple but the statue remained unscathed.

Lunch: soba noodles in Japanese style broth and flavoured steamed rice.

Ancient defense mechanism. This path was supposed to fool the enemy into thinking that the distance was closer than what it actually was.

This little squirrel was absolutely adorable. It came so up close to the people and lingered in the crowd and posed cutely for photos. An attention seeker no doubt.

This is the last of my Japan trip blog post. I adore Japan and every time I go there, I fall in love with it more and more. I hope you guys have enjoyed reading about my trip.
