Clinique Whole Lotta Colour Chubby Stick Gift Set | Christmas 2012

Hi everyone. It's been a while since I last updated the blog and I am back with some good news! My skin has gotten a lot better since my last post, which was a very hefty and photo heavy project 366 post (here's the LINK to that post just in case you haven't seen it).

I am almost certain that my skin problem was caused by an Origins moisturiser and a Skin 79 bb cream that I was trying. Both of the aforementioned products are very rich, so using both of those together were just too much for my oily skin, especially in the hot humid climate that is Malaysia. Ever since I stopped using these two products, the little bumps on my skin have gone down considerably and my skin do not get oily as quickly throughout the day.

Now that my skin is better, I thought I must quickly get on with my reviews for Christmas/ Holiday 2012 makeup collections since Christmas is just over a month away now.

The first product that I will be reviewing for you is the Clinique Whole Lotta Colour Chubby Stick Gift Set for Christmas 2012.

This set contains five mini Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balm in a gorgeous bright pink and silver box.

The colours in this set are: (from left) 07 Super Strawberry, 12 Oversized Orange, 14 Curvy Candy, 01 Richer Raisin & 05 Chunky Cherry.

Size comparison between the mini and full size. I don't have a full size chubby stick but according to the internet, the Revlon Just Bitten Kissable Balm Stain is the same size as the full size chubby stick.

You get 0.04oz/ 1.2g of product in each tube.

For those living in the States, you are paying a premium with this set because a full size chubby stick contains 0.10oz/ 2.8g of product and it retails for $15. This set contains 0.20oz of product and it retails for $34.50 (source).

For those living in Malaysia, this set does amount to a tiny bit of saving because a full size (0.10oz/ 2.8g) is RM58.00 but this set is RM110.00 for 0.20oz/ 6g of product.

The colours (left swatch is a single pass and right is a built up swatch). From left: 07 Super Strawberry (sheer mauve tone pink), 12 Oversized Orange (sheer peachy tangerine), 14 Curvy Candy (sheer candy pink), 01 Richer Raisin (sheer plummy brown) & 05 Chunky Cherry (sheer cherry red).

If you like sheer lip colour, the Clinique Chubby Stick Moisturizing Lip Colour Balms are very nice in my opinion. The texture is very smooth, it has no obvious scent and it applies very well and evenly onto the lips without slipping around or being patchy. The texture is not too heavy or greasy and it is very comfortable to wear. This product is forgiving on slightly dry lips since it doesn't emphasize dry patches or lip lines. However, I don't find it to be super moisturizing so if your lips are very chapped or dehydrated, this product will not be of much help.

I personally really like the way these Chubby Sticks looks on the lips. The texture is slightly sheer (as in it has a translucent finish) but the colour do show up on the lips. On my lips, this product looks freshly applied for around 2 hours with occasional drinks. This product fades very nicely (not like some that can be patchy/ uneven as it wears away), so you do not necessarily need to reapply frequently. I do find that after I've been wearing the chubby sticks for several hours, the inner rim of my lips do feel a little bit dry. For a product that claims to be moisturizing, I do think that it fell short on that front. All in all, I like the Clinique Chubby sticks as a sheer lip colour and not so much as a moisturizing tinted lip balm.

This Whole Lotta Colour Chubby Stick Gift Set will make a great gift, especially for those who have been wanting to try out the Chubby Sticks since you get to try more colours before investing in a full size one. I am sure that someone who likes sheer lip colours/ someone who likes Clinique/ someone who is a big fan of the Clinique Chubby Sticks/ a makeup junkie will really appreciate this little gift set too. You can also get this set and split it up as smaller gifts or stocking stuffers!!

Lastly, here's what the colours look like on the lips:
07 Super Strawberry

12 Oversized Orange

14 Curvy Candy

 01 Richer Raisin.

You might notice that the makeup I was wearing is the same for Super Strawberry, Richer Raisin and Chunky Cherry. I don't like doing too many lip swatches on the same day since it dries my lips out a lot but I needed to do it for this post in order to save time.

05 Chunky Cherry

I hope you enjoyed reading my first Christmas 2012 makeup review and I will be posting more reviews in the next few weeks so please look forward to that.

  1. It took me awhile to like clinique chubby stick... I have one in super strawberry and at first I didnt like it.. but now it's been a staple in my bag esp for everyday at the university.. I usually wear pigmented lipstick at work ( mostly even bold red lipstick ) but at uni, I just want a bit of color and Super Strawberry is perfect..
I think this set is a nice one because you get to try some colors :))

  5. Wow! When I saw the set it made me drool, the packaging is adorable and the 5 shades of chubby sticks look amazing! From the way you described the Clinique chubby sticks, they are more creamier and moisturising than the Revlon lip stains! I found that the Revlon ones became drying and accentuated dry flakes (yuck!) on my lips after a while. This is a good deal, I want to holiday in Malaysia :(

  7. Love this post! The chubby stick is something that I am thinking of purchasing, but here where I live (Slovakia) the prices are rather high, but I'd be willing to pay for a set like this. Love the fact that you took pictures wearing each one (and may I add you have amazing lips!), the colors look great. Did you get the set in Sephora?

  12. I didn't know you were from Malaysia! I'm glad to hear this set is so affordable though because Chubby Sticks seem like an easy way to pop color on your lips (for me, the Revlon balm stains require more careful application). Thanks for sharing!

  36. Cute that they come in a set and you can try out all the colours! Seems a little silly that you would be paying a bit of a premium for a set, cause usually you're getting better value. Either way I do love the chubby sticks! Thanks for the swatches :)

  43. thank you for the review. I have been watching out for this review and found this one from the link you provided on your last post. I def love the colors. It is disappointing to know that they are drying. Is it replaceable by the revlon ones?

  44. In my opinion, the chubby sticks are not quite the same as the Revlon balm stains. The Revlon balm stains are more pigmented and it leaves behind a glossy finish that will fade away to reveal a stain as it wears. The Clinique chubby sticks are just tinted lip balms (though the moisturizing properties are short lived), with the colour payoff not being as intense as the Revlon ones. The chubby sticks also do not leave behind a stain.

The bottom line is, I don't find the Revlon ones to be particularly moisturizing either, so the product that you want to choose will largely depends on the finish you are looking for/ look you are trying to achieve. If you want a more natural looking lip colour, then I think chubby sticks are the way to go. If you want something with a better colour payoff that last a bit longer, maybe a few hours longer than the Clinique ones since i find that the Revlon balm stains fade away very unevenly so I need to re-apply quite frequently, then maybe you will like the Revlon balm stains.

I personally wear the chubby stick more often than the Revlon ones because I prefer the way it looks on the lips. The Revlon balm stains tend to cling onto dry patches while the Clinique ones do not emphasize dryness. Hope this helps ^-^
